It is important to have essential equipment when you hike. If you leave the pavement and head out on the trails, we strongly suggest you ALWAYS take the 10 Essentials with you (even on a short hike)! This can prepare you for minor injuries, weather changes, or unplanned delays.
Your cell phone often won’t work on the trail. We suggest putting it in airplane mode, so if you do need to try to use it, it will have some battery life left. Texting may work, even when a voice call doesn’t.
In addition to this list, also consider a whistle (louder than your voice), toilet paper and a plastic baggie (pack it out!), bug repellent, lip balm, a mirror, and a day pack to carry everything.
