Planning a hike?
|
Over the weekend of Dec 8 and 9 the Ojai SAR Alpine specialty team went looking for tough conditions in Ventura County; to prepare for this season's cold weather and snow. Yes, Ventura County doesn't typically get covered in snow and most of us don't know what to do with a snow shovel, but the team needs to prepare for these types of conditions. One might ask why??? Well, we commonly deploy to Mt Pinos or Pine Mountain for to search for missing or overdue hikers during winter conditions. We also are called upon to assist in Yosemite and San Bernardino (Mt Baldy) thru the CA OES Mutual Aid system (California Office of Emergency Services). This training involved hiking a loop in the vicinity of Thorn Meadows. The team hiked to Thorn Point Lookout, then cross-county along a ridge line in a northwesterly direction, till the team reached the intersection of Cedar Creek trail. The team followed the trail back to the rescue truck parked at Thorn Meadows. You will see the team camped for the night; awaking to find a couple inches of new snow. The photos are separated in to two pages, to conserve bandwidth. Use the menu bar on the left to navigate.
